Neosurf, manufactured by Cipla, is a natural pulmonary surfactant suspension derived from bovine lipid extracts, presented in a 5 ml vial. It is specifically indicated for the prevention and treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. These newborns lack adequate natural surfactant, causing alveolar collapse and severe respiratory failure. Neosurf works by lowering alveolar surface tension, stabilizing the air sacs, and improving oxygenation. The medication must be administered exclusively via intratracheal instillation by a trained neonatologist within a neonatal intensive care setting. Concomitant monitoring of infant ventilation parameters is essential, and it must never be injected.
